Charlie-in-the-Box is a character from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. He is a jack-in-the-box who is a resident of the Island of Misfit Toys, where he serves as the official sentry. He states that his name is the reason he is a misfit toy, claiming that no child wants to play with a Charlie-in-the-Box. In the special's extended ending (added in 1965), he and the rest of the misfit toys are shown being picked up by Santa Claus and delivered to the homes of children who would like to play with them.
Charlie appeared again in the direct-to-video sequel, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys. In this movie, he and many other toys, including his fellow Misfit Toys, are abducted from their homes by The Toy Taker. According to this movie, his new owner is named Sarah.
Charlie made a brief cameo in The Simpsons episode "'Tis the Fifteenth Season". In one scene, Homer briefly watches a fictional stop-motion television special titled The Year Santa Got Lost, in which Charlie and a few other Misfit Toys are shown listening to a story told by a mailman voiced by Jimmy Stewart.
