The Fox and Cat are a pair of antagonists from the novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Italian author Carlo Collodi. Throughout the book, they are constantly tricking Pinocchio. Though they were unnamed in the book, the 1940 animated film adaptation by Walt Disney Animation Studios famously gave them the names "Honest" John Worthington Foulfellow and Gideon, while the Rankin/Bass television series The New Adventures of Pinocchio named them Foxy Q. Fibble and Cool S. Cat.
Appearances in Christmas specials[]
Almost two decades after their previous Pinocchio adaptation, Rankin/Bass featured the Fox and Cat again as antagonists in Pinocchio's Christmas. However, they did not retain their names from the New Adventures series.
Trivia[]
- In the Disney story album An Adaptation of Dickens' Christmas Carol, Performed by The Walt Disney Players, Foulfellow and Gideon were cast as the two poor collectors who ask Ebenezer Scrooge (played by Scrooge McDuck) to donate to their charity. Perhaps due to the oddity of casting these villainous characters as charity workers, when the album was adapted as Mickey's Christmas Carol, the roles were instead played by Water Rat and Mole from The Wind in the Willows.
