George J. Jetson is the main character from the Hanna-Barbera animated television series The Jetsons. He resides with his family, consisting of his wife Jane and their kids Judy and Elroy, in the Skypad Apartments in Orbit City. He is an employee at Spacely's Space Sprockets, where his job title is "digital index operator", though he is frequently fired whenever things go wrong.

Appearances in Christmas specials[]

The Jetsons[]

Spacely the killjoy

George is forced to work overtime on Christmas Eve.

Naturally, George's only starring role in a Christmas special was in "A Jetson Christmas Carol", produced when the series went into syndication in 1985. Fitting with the Christmas Carol-type plot, George finds himself as the Bob Cratchit to Mr. Spacely's Ebenezer Scrooge when he is forced to work overtime on Christmas Eve ("Now it's only Santa Claus and me who have to work on Christmas Eve!"). After remarking that Spacely is worse than Scrooge and wishing that he get a visit from "some weird Christmas ghosts", George manages to finish his workload, but when he arrives home, he finds that the family pet, Astro, has fallen gravely ill (due to accidentally swallowing a gear) and may not survive.

Unbeknownst to George, Mr. Spacely is being shown the error of his ways by the ghosts of Christmas like he wished would happen. In the future shown by the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Be, we see that George, after finding out that Spacely Sprockets manufactured the gear that caused Astro's death, would sue his boss for everything he owned. In the end, Mr. Spacely brings his personal veterinarian to the Jetsons' apartment to cure Astro of his illness, and also gives George a big raise as his Christmas gift.

Other Christmas productions[]

Jetsons RadioShack Christmas commercial

George with Jane and Astro in the Sprint Store's 1997 Christmas commercial.

In the late 1990s, the Jetsons appeared in a series of commercials for The Sprint Store at RadioShack. This included a Christmas-themed commercial aired in 1997, in which George, Jane, and Astro are doing their holiday shopping there. George does not look forward to having to program the Sprint products that Jane suggests they buy, but to his relief, a Sprint salesman offers to help.

Trivia[]

  • On the subject of characters playing Bob Cratchit, the version of Cratchit seen in Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol bears a noticeable resemblance to George. However, this is most likely a coincidence, since Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol premiered in the same year as The Jetsons itself (1962).
