James LaRue Avery (November 27, 1945 - December 31, 2013) was an American actor and voice actor, who was best known for voicing The Shredder for most of the first seven seasons in the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series and portraying Philip Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
