Jim Backus (February 25, 1913 – July 3, 1989) was an American actor best known for voicing Mr. Magoo and playing Thurston Howell III on the CBS sitcom Giligan's Island (a role he would reprise on its animated spin-offs produced by Filmation) and appearances in movies such as Rebel Without a Cause, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Pete's Dragon (1977), and C.H.O.M.P.S.
