John Hughes (February 18, 1950 - August 6, 2009) was an American filmmaker who began his career as an author of humorous essays and stories for National Lampoon. Among his film credits include writing National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles, the last of which he also directed.
