Krampus is a mythical demon, who visits the homes of naughty kids on Christmas, to punish them for their bad behavior. His punishments vary from hitting naughty kids with a stick, trapping them in a wicker basket, and giving them coal instead of presents. His legacy originated in Germany in the 11th century, and started getting referenced in media, starting with written literature in the 19th century. He rose in popularity in several countries, other than Germany, around the 21st century.
