"Last Christmas!" is the first Christmas-themed episode of the Disney Channel animated television series DuckTales (the reboot series, that is, not the classic Disney Afternoon series, which ironically never had a Christmas episode itself), produced and aired as the eighth episode of its second season. It was confirmed by David Tennant (who voiced Scrooge McDuck) at the FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention in September 2018. The episode is named after the song of the same name, and the plot is inspired by Mickey's Christmas Carol.
Synopsis[]
Christmas has come to Duckburg, and the Duck family is putting up decorations around McDuck Manor. Unfortunately, Scrooge is living up to his name and seems to want no part in the festivities, and destroys an inflatable Santa Claus before retreating to his private quarters. Meanwhile, Donald goes to invite Dewey for caroling, but leaves the boy alone when he sees that he's grieving about the absence of his and his brothers' mother, Della.
Shortly after, Dewey sees a green light coming from Scrooge's room, and when he enters, he finds Scrooge casually hanging out with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. Scrooge reveals that he actually does not hate Christmas (but he still maintains his inexplicable grudge against Santa) and that he met the ghosts many years ago when they mistook him for someone else named Scrooge. Since then, every year, they go back in time to visit history's greatest Christmas parties and give Scrooge a break from his other responsibilities. As they do so this year, Dewey secretly hitches a ride with them, but loses his grip and lands twenty years in the past.
Scrooge and the Ghosts arrive at the time of the first annual McDuck Enterprises Christmas party. Scrooge is at first delighted with this, but to his dismay, he is quickly mistaken for his younger self by the other partygoers and dragged into various business responsibilities; he ultimately misses his chance to join the festivities when the party is crashed by the Beagle Boys. After he vents his frustrations to Christmas Past, the ghost brings him back to his first Christmas in Duckburg. Scrooge is relaxed at first, but he quickly becomes bored and learns Christmas is about the benefits of his responsibilities - hearth, home, and family. However, the Ghost of Christmas Past doesn't want Scrooge to abandon him and his partners like the Ghosts' previous clients. Scrooge escapes by taking the Ghost's time-brella, leaving the poor spirit stuck in the past.
Meanwhile, Dewey goes looking around the McDuck Manor of twenty years ago to find Della and comes upon Donald's younger self. Pretending to be a distant relative, Dewey asks about Della's whereabouts, and Young Donald says she's outside hunting Santa. Dewey snatches his future uncle's guitar and runs outside, where they're suddenly ambushed by a creature called a Wendigo. As the two boys run from it, they are caught in a net trap set by Della, who won't let them go until Donald apologizes. Dewey figures that Della is mad at her brother because he wasn't spending Christmas with her, much like Dewey himself was doing at the beginning of the episode. Donald apologizes and Della lets them go, at which point the Wendigo appears, saying it's looking for Scrooge. The three ducklings fight off the Wendigo, with Donald ultimately defeating it after it destroys his guitar.
As they drag the Wendigo back to the mansion, the now-reconciled twins figure out that Dewey is from the future, but they reject his warnings to avoid time disruption. After they leave to go get the Scrooge of their time for help, the Wendigo breaks free, only to be knocked back down by the present-day Scrooge, still time-traveling with the other two Ghosts. The Wendigo then reverts to its original form - the Ghost of Christmas Past, having turned into a Wendigo out of desperation and loneliness due to Scrooge abandoning him in the past. Scrooge apologizes by giving the Ghost his time-brella back, and the Ghost accepts and brings Scrooge and Dewey back home to the present. The episode ends with Scrooge and Dewey, along with the three Ghosts, joining the family to sing Christmas carol. Meanwhile, up on the moon, Della wishes her uncle and brother a merry Christmas as she works on fixing her rocket.
