Meowth (Japanese: ニャース Nyarth) is a character featured in the anime Pokémon, based on Game Freak's video game series of the same name. Meowth is a specimen of the cat-like Normal-type Pokémon species of the same name who is a member of the criminal organization Team Rocket. Alongside his teammates Jessie and James, he engages in various evil schemes, which usually involve trying to steal Ash Ketchum's Pikachu or some other Pokémon for their boss, Giovanni, but never succeeding. Team Rocket's Meowth is unlike ordinary Meowth (and most other Pokémon) in that he can speak like a human and walks on two legs instead of four. He had learned these traits in an attempt to impress a female Meowth named Meowzie, who instead rejected him, which ultimately led to him joining Team Rocket. Due to his effort in teaching himself how to walk and talk like a human, Meowth cannot perform his species' signature attack, Pay Day, and does not often participate in Pokémon battles.
