Nephi is the protagonist of Samuel and the Sign... at least starting from adulthood. He is the older of two sons of a man also named Nephi (though it is not shown in the special), the younger being Timothy.

As a boy, Nephi and Timothy are unloading a cart of full sacks when they witness the wicked Nephites framing Samuel the Lamanite for stealing Giddianhi's money and ejecting him. They tell the captain Lachoneus.

When Samuel preaches on the wall, Nephi warns Samuel of the ammo being used on him, but is protected.

Nephi and Timothy show happiness for Samuel when he runs away from danger.

Five years later, Nephi and Timothy have grown up. Nephi is angry when Giddianhi kicks his door open and tries to rub in this "false prophecy" into Nephi's face, because five years had passed, and there is no night without darkness. Nephi tells him the sign will come. Giddianhi threatens Nephi with death, also to every believer, for following a "false" prophet.

Back in Zarahemla, Nephi assembles believers together, saying they would just pray and believe instead of lying to save their lives or fighting. When one of the men asks why they should believe a Lamanite, Nephi says it's because he told the truth. Nephi then joins one of the believers named Jarom in his song of faith, and they go home to pray.

The next day, they form a group in Zarahemla to pray and believe. That night, the sun sets and it gets dark at first, so Giddianhi and the Gadianton robbers prepare to kill them, but then a light shines and covers the sky above the land, causing the robbers and Giddianhi to drop their swords, and one of them to point it up. Nephi announces thanks to the Lord, and that they should never forget to thank God, and announces Jesus is born.

His story is in the book of 3 Nephi (Third Nephi).
