"Perry Como's French-Canadian Christmas" is an 1981 Christmas special that debuted on ABC on December 22, 1981.

Synopsis[]

This televised Christmas special, filmed in Quebec, features the music of Perry Como and a number of guests. It begins as Como and several others sing a medley of songs, including "He is Born, The Divine Christ Child" and "Un flambeau, Jeanette, Isabella", after which Como sings "Do You Hear What I Hear?". He is joined by singer Debby Boone, and they reenact a 17th-century scene in which Boone sings "Wonderful, Wonderful Day". A group of costumed singers perform the traditional "Alouette" in a processional, Como and Boone sing "Married" from Cabaret, and reprise "Wonderful, Wonderful Day". Como sings "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Forever" and the V'Là L'Bon Vent dance troupe performs "Un pays beau." Como chats with Canadian singer Diane Tell, who says that her birthday is Christmas Eve. She then sings "Si j'étais un homme" at a nightclub. She and Como then sing "C'est si bon, c'est magnifique."

Pianist Andre Gagnon plays "Carol of the Bells". Then he and Como are joined by several Canadian hockey players and figure skater Dorothy Hamill, and he plays an original number as Hamill skates. Como sings "White Christmas" followed by "Christ is Born" and "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" with the Mount Royal Conservatory Children's Choir. Next, he explains that Canadian tradition involves awakening the children very early on Christmas morning after returning from midnight mass, and he and a large family celebrate with gifts and music singing "Deck the Halls". He and Boone sing "Away in a Manger", Tell sing "Silent Night" in French, and they all sing "O Come All Ye Faithful". Como closes the special with "O Holy Night" in a church featuring a Nativity scene.
