Pikachu (Japanese: ピカチュウ Pikachu) is an Electric-type Pokémon from Game Freak's video game series Pokémon. It evolves from Pichu when leveled up with high friendship and evolves into Raichu when exposed to a Thunder Stone. It is popularly known as the mascot species of the Pokémon franchise and a major representative of Nintendo's collective mascots. In 2002, it was voted #15 in TV Guide's Top 50 Greatest Cartoon Characters, notably being the only character in the countdown to originate from a video game.
In the Pokémon anime, Ash Ketchum's Pikachu is the first Pokémon he ever had and is always by Ash's side. He is also a constant target for Team Rocket members Jessie, James, and Meowth. They try to capture him, but on the few occasions that they do, their plans are thwarted by Ash and his friends.
As Ash's first Pokémon, Pikachu is also the main Pokémon to appear not only in a Christmas episode, but also in the holiday shorts, known as Pikachu's Winter Vacations.
