Spike is Snoopy's older brother from the newspaper comic strip Peanuts. He lives in a desert outside the city of Needles, California, with his best friend, a cactus. Introduced in the strip in August 1975, he was the most frequently recurring of Snoopy's siblings. He was named after Peanuts creator Charles Schulz's childhood pet dog, who was himself the inspiration for Snoopy.

Appearances in Christmas specials[]

Lucy meets Spike

Spike's first appearance in a Christmas special, and his most prominent one thus far, was in I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown. When Rerun van Pelt, who wants a dog of his own for Christmas, learns about Snoopy's siblings, he asks Snoopy to invite Spike over to his house. He arrives at the Van Pelt residence, bringing his cactus companion with him. This leads to the special adapting Spike's introductory storyline from the comic strip, in which Lucy, shocked at how skinny and malnourished he is, feeds him as much as he can eat, causing him to gain a considerable amount of weight. The special then has him losing said weight from fear when riding with Rerun on the back of his mom's bicycle (in the original strip, he was not seen losing his newfound weight, as he ran off after a failed attempt to battle Snoopy's feline nemesis, World War II "the cat next door"). Since Mrs. Van Pelt will not allow Rerun to keep Spike as his pet, Charlie Brown tries asking some of the other kids in the neighborhood to take in Spike, but to no avail. Ultimately, Spike returns back to his home in the desert.

Spike more recently appeared in The Snoopy Show episode "Happiness Is Holiday Traditions".
