"The Nutcracker" is the second Christmas episode of the preschool computer animated series Super Why!. As the title suggests, it is based on The Nutcracker. It debuted on most PBS stations in the United States and on CBC in Canada on November 25, 2009.
Synopsis[]
Princess Pea, the daughter of the King and Queen from the story "The Princess and the Pea" is having a royal party at her castle, and Sleeping Beauty, who had not enough sleep, is grumpy. When Whyatt Beanstalk, the brother of Jack of "Jack and the Beanstalk" fame, decides to play some dance music, Sleeping Beauty can not take it, and after a minute turns off the music. This leads Whyatt to bring Princess Pea, The Littlest Pig (of "The Three Little Pigs") and Little Red Riding Hood to their book club at Storybook Village. There, they transform into The Super Readers - Whyatt as Super Why, Pig into Alpha Pig, Red Riding Hood becoming Wonder Red and Princess Pea changes into Princess Presto.
There, they fly (and literally, dance) into The Nutcracker book and meet up with Clara and her Nutcracker Prince, who are trying to get to the Land of Sweets only to find an angry Mouse King stopping their every move. First he sends out three henchmice, but Alpha Pig encourages viewers to find the letters in the word "fly", and Clara and the Prince escape. Then after meeting three snow maidens, the king makes all the snow disappear but Princess Presto helps out by asking the viewing audience to spell the word "SNOW", and the snow returns. Finally, they arrive at the Land of Sweets for a party, but the King stops the music, so Super Why asks the children on the television for a word that replaces "stops" (which is in this case, "starts") and the music is restored, and Wonder Red teaches the Mouse King to dance his grumpiness away.
Along the way, the young audience is asked to search for red, glittery letters that form a "Super Story Answer", which in this case is "DANCE", of which Red Riding Hood and Princess Pea teach Sleeping Beauty to dance her grumpiness away.
