The Pink Panther is a cartoon character created by DePatie-Freleng Enterprises in 1963. He originated in the animated opening credits sequence for the comedy film of the same name (the film's title actually refers to a pink gem with a tiny discoloration resembling a leaping panther). Due to the popularity of the animated sequence that featured the character, DePatie-Freleng went on to produce a series of animated shorts featuring the Pink Panther character, starting with the Academy Award-winning The Pink Phink in 1964. The Panther is generally a silent character, except in two shorts, Sink Pink and Pink Ice, and the 1993 Pink Panther animated series. In addition, starting from The Return of the Pink Panther, the fourth installment of the original film series, the character continued to appear in the opening credits of every Pink Panther movie, even if the titular gem has nothing to do with the plot.
