Sally would like her very own teddy bear and asks Santa Claus for one. Her brother, Simon, teases her about her letter to Santa, whose existence he is a little skeptical about, and at the same time tries to find out what it is she wants. But for her, it is a secret between herself, Santa, and Simon's teddy bear, Ben.
When Slurp, the family dog, eats the letter, Ben sets out to find Santa himself even if it means to go unteddy. When at the local toy shop where Santa is meant to be, Ben meets another teddy bear who accompanies him back home, but ends up getting separated from him by a snowplow.
On Christmas Day, Simon and Sally go to open their presents, but Ben becomes worried that Sally will be upset about not getting a teddy bear. However, he soon learns that she did get one, who turns out to be the one Ben met at the toy shop. She names him Wally and places him next to Ben.
