"Twas the Night" is the first Christmas episode of the Cartoon Network original series Johnny Bravo, aired as the third segment in the fifth episode of the show's first season, alongside "I Used to Be Funny" and "My Fair Dork". Despite being a Christmas episode, it premiered on August 4, 1997.
Synopsis[]
It is Christmas Eve in Aron City, and Johnny is awoken from his sleep when he hears a noise. As his mother, Bunny, is still asleep, having drifted off to sleep during a marathon of It's a Wonderful Life, Johnny heads up to the roof to investigate. He finds Santa and, mistaking him for a burglar, knocks him unconscious with a flying kick before realizing his mistake. After Santa regains consciousness, he tells Johnny that he broke his arm, and thus Johnny will have to fill in for him.
Johnny takes off into the sky, getting the reindeer's names wrong when he calls them out, and when he asks why "that freak with the big glowing nose" isn't leading the team, we see the reindeer in question battling some men working for the Grinch. Johnny delivers gifts to the townspeople and animals (including speech therapy for Scooby-Doo), in spite of how bushed he finds himself getting. When Johnny finally finishes the task, he realizes he has lost a gift meant for Bunny, which accidentally ended up at the mayor's house. Johnny returns home disappointed, only to find that he accidentally gave her a giant diamond ring (likely meant for the mayor's wife). Johnny is then surprised to find that Santa left him a gift - a pair of boxing gloves and a mouth guard, along with a note that says, "Merry Christmas, you pinhead; round two is next year."
Notes[]
- When Johnny checks Santa's list, among the people listed are senators who are all getting coal, whose last names are derived from other Hanna-Barbera characters (including Dick Dastardly and Muttley, Quick Draw McGraw, Ruff and Reddy, Yogi and Boo Boo, and the Jetsons, as well as Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera themselves and Turner Broadcasting's then-new partner company, Time Warner). Conversely, one of the "nice" people on the list is "Sen. Puffnstuff", which is a reference to H.R. Puffnstuff.
Availability[]
The episode was made available on home video for the first time on the Cartoon Network: Christmas Rocks DVD, released by Warner Home Video in 2005. It was later included on the Johnny Bravo: Season One DVD set, released in 2010.
