File:Rudolph the Red- Nosed Reindeer- "We are Santa's Elfs"

"We Are Santa's Elves" is a song written for the Rankin/Bass Christmas television special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. It is sung by the elves for Santa Claus, who utterly hates it, while Mrs. Claus enjoys it.

In later rebroadcasts of the special (as well as the video releases by Family Home Entertainment), the song was trimmed to cut out the instrumental bridge and most of the lyrics following it. At some point in the 1970s, the sequence featuring the song was cut entirely before being reinstated a few years later.[1]

Lyrics

Original version

Ho Ho Ho, Ho Ho Ho
We are Santa's elves!

We are Santa's elves
Filling Santa's shelves
With a toy for each girl and boy
Oh, we are Santa's elves!

We work hard all day
But our work is play
Dolls we try out
See if they cry out
We are Santa's elves!

We've a special job each year
We don't like to brag
Christmas Eve we always fill Santa's bag

Santa knows who's good
Do the things you should
And we bet you, he won't forget you
We are Santa's elves!

[Instrumental bridge]

[Repeat fourth and fifth verses]

Ho Ho Ho, Ho Ho Ho
We are Santa's elves!
Ho HO!

Short version (used on later rebroadcasts and Family Home Entertainment releases of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer)

Ho Ho Ho, Ho Ho Ho

Filling Santa's shelves
With a toy for each girl and boy

We are Santa's elves!

We've a special job each year
We don't like to brag

And we bet you, he won't forget you
We are Santa's elves!

Ho Ho Ho, Ho Ho Ho
We are Santa's elves!
Ho HO!
